What your day will look like
The Commercial Finance Director is the senior finance leader embedded within the commercial organization, serving as the primary bridge between Sales and Finance. This role owns commercial deal governance, revenue forecasting integrity, and financial rigor across the end-to-end deal lifecycle.
The position ensures disciplined deal approval, protects margin and accounting compliance, reduces downstream pressure on Accounting, and provides the CFO with clear, reliable revenue visibility.
What you need to fulfill the role
Core Responsibilities
Commercial Deal Governance & Final Sign-Off
- Own the end-to-end deal approval process (Deal Hub governance)
- Provide final finance sign-off on all non-standard and material deals
- Ensure pricing discipline, margin protection, and risk assessment
- Make “red flag” / “red rack” calls when: Revenue recognition risk exists, Contract terms create accounting or cash flow exposure, Operational complexity is excessive
- Ensure deals are structured correctly before they reach Accounting
Revenue Forecasting & Commercial FP&A
- Own commercial forecasting in partnership with Sales
- Validate pipeline quality and forecast accuracy
- Challenge assumptions in commit and best-case forecasts
- Provide the CFO with: Weekly revenue outlook, Quarter close confidence levels, Risk & upside analysis, Deal-level impact analysis
Sales Business Partnering
- Act as Finance lead embedded in Sales leadership forums
- Build credibility with CRO / Sales leaders
- Support: Pricing strategy, Discount governance, Sales incentives financial modeling, Large/strategic bid strategy
- Train Sales teams on financial implications of deal structures
Deal Workflow & Process Excellence
Implement and optimize best-practice deal workflow.

- Revenue recognition assessment
Cash flow impact
Operational complexity - Legal & Sales Ops alignment
- Final Commercial Finance Director sign-off (for threshold deals)

Forecast accuracy
Accounting escalations post-signature
Sales Operations Alignment
- Work closely with Sales Ops on:
Pipeline hygiene
CRM data integrity
Booking policies
Quota design impact
- Ensure CRM reflects finance-relevant deal structure details
- Align forecasting methodology between Sales and Finance
Protecting the Accounting Team
This role acts as a buffer between aggressive commercial structuring and accounting compliance.
Responsibilities:
Pre-clear revenue recognition risks
Standardize contract templates
Eliminate custom structures that create manual accounting work
Reduce post-deal escalations
What “Good” Looks Like
- Forecast accuracy consistently within ±5%
- No material revenue recognition surprises
- CFO can answer Board revenue questions confidently
- Accounting team reports lower deal-related escalations
- Sales views Finance as strategic partner, not hurdle
Profile of the Right Person
- 10–15+ years in Commercial Finance / Deal Desk / Revenue FP&A
- Deep understanding of: Revenue recognition principles, SaaS / subscription metrics (if applicable), Contract structuring
- Strong commercial instincts (not purely technical)
- Confident in challenging senior Sales leaders
- Data-driven but pragmatic
- Comfortable making “no” decisions when required
- Experience building or transforming deal approval processes
