What your day will look like
Mission
As part of the Systems Engineering team, you will join as a Junior to Mid-level Database Administrator. You will support the operation, monitoring and continuous improvement of our Azure SQL environments while working closely with experienced senior team members. This role offers the opportunity to develop your cloud database expertise in a collaborative international environment.
Main Responsibilities
- Support day-to-day administration of Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance environments under the guidance of senior team members.
- Monitor database health using Azure Monitor, Azure Metrics and Query Performance Insight, escalating anomalies and logging findings.
- Assist with performance investigations by identifying slow-running queries, reviewing execution plans and applying optimisation recommendations with senior support.
- Execute backup and restore procedures using Azure Backup for SQL and automated backup policies.
- Participate in regular recovery testing.
- Maintain access and security controls by assisting in managing logins, roles and permissions in line with least-privilege principles.
- Support database patching and updates in non-production environments. Document changes for senior review before production rollout.
- Collaborate with development teams on schema review tasks, flagging potential issues before deployment.
- Contribute to automation efforts by developing T-SQL scripts and PowerShell automation to reduce manual tasks.
- Maintain documentation including runbooks, backup schedules, access matrices and incident logs.
- Participate in on-call learning rotations alongside senior Database Administrators to build incident response experience.
- Assist with Azure cost monitoring, flagging unexpected resource usage and scaling opportunities.
What you need to fulfill the role
- 1–3 years of experience in Database Administration.
- Hands-on experience with Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance.
- Experience working with Microsoft SQL Server (2016 or later).
- Good SQL and T-SQL knowledge, including writing queries, stored procedures and basic scripting.
- Familiarity with Azure Portal and cloud-based database administration.
- Understanding of database backup, restore and recovery concepts.
- Knowledge of database security, including logins, roles and permissions.
- Experience with Azure Monitor, PowerShell, Azure CLI or similar automation and monitoring tools is an advantage.
- Understanding of high availability concepts such as geo-replication or failover groups is beneficial.
- Exposure to database DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines or schema deployment tools.
- Strong communication skills, a collaborative mindset and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Self-motivated with a strong willingness to learn modern cloud technologies, automation and continuously improve processes.
- Ability to work effectively in an international and collaborative team environment.
- Fluent English
